Accept Your Vulnerabilities

“When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable.
But to grow up is to accept vulnerability…To be alive is to be vulnerable.” ~Madeleine L’Engle

“You are amazing!” and “I could never do what you do!” is the admiring feedback caregivers often receive. Yet, in spite of the accolades of others and the important and gratifying nature of our work, we caregivers aren’t superhumans! We have challenges and problems like everyone else that can threaten our ability to provide care.

Are you currently noticing any “distress signals” in your role as caregiver? The signals could include feeling consistently overwhelmed, worn-out, apathetic, anxious or depressed. Night after night of poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, and new or worsening physical problems should be of concern as well. If you notice threatening signs such as these, seek out a trusted friend, counselor, or colleague to talk to. Then together make an action plan for moving forward–even if it includes taking a short break from your duties for awhile!

Warm Regards,

Rebecca Hauder RN, LCPC
