Face the Pain; Find Lasting Joy

Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness, will we discover the infinite power of light.  ~Brene Brown

An acquaintance of mine died after years of drinking. She had gradually cut herself off from friends and family becoming more and more reclusive. I learned later that she had never unraveled and dealt with the pain of sexual abuse she had suffered as a child.

Facing dark and painful emotions is never easy! There are a variety of ways we hold those emotions at bay including substance abuse, withdrawal from or mistreating others, and self-harm. The problem is, when we continue to push away difficult unwanted feelings, we also push away the potential for lasting joy and emotional connectedness to others.

What pain, if any, might you be avoiding? How is it impacting your relationship with those in your care or with those close to you?

I recently came across a helpful article in Psychology Today to safely guide you in exploring the full palette of your emotions, including painful ones, so that you can find greater joy, healthier relationships, and “the infinite power of light.” Check the article out here!
